Jamie Carragher says he sympathises with Arsenal fans after a miserable start to the season and claims Unai Emery has only succeeded in creating ‘confusion’ at the club.

The Gunners are sitting down in eighth in the Premier League following Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Southampton and Emery has reportedly been given three games to save his job.

Mauricio Pochettino, Max Allegri and Mikel Arteta are all being eyed as possible replacements despite Arsenal giving Emery the vote of confidence during the international break.

Liverpool legend Carragher is not surprised by the recent reports and believes Emery – a ‘Europa League level’ manager – is not up to the job at the Emirates.

The former England defender also highlighted how much of a ‘disaster’ Luiz has been since his arrival from Chelsea in the summer.

‘Unai Emery hasn’t adapted, he’s created confusion,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

‘Confusion in the crowd, confusion with his players and confusion for himself. In this one game against Southampton, I think in some ways it almost sums up the 18 months of Emery at Arsenal, really.

‘David Luiz, a player they brought in during the summer who I actually thought it might not have been a bad signing but it’s been a disaster for them.

‘Strikers in this team, he’s got two top strikers, probably as good as a pair of strikers in the league with Lacazette and Aubameyang, you don’t bear to think how bad it would be without these two.

‘I just look at it and I’m not sure what is really going on there at Arsenal, that is where the confusion is being created.

‘I think the reason that Arsenal fans are chanting for him to go is because I think they’re in this position with Arsene Wenger, slightly different because he had a lot more time at the end because he’s a legend and he’s won so much, but I think Arsenal fans look back and think that the two best managers in the Premier League, possibly the world, they missed out on because they stuck too long with their manager.

‘That’s where I think the resentment now coming from the supporters is maybe because they’re looking at Tottenham moving a manager on, maybe Manchester United will be doing it shortly or in the summer, and they don’t want to miss out again because, at this moment, I think Emery isn’t Champions League level, he’s Europa League level.

‘A great career but it’s not the level I think Arsenal needed.’

Gary Neville agreed that Arsenal would have no option but to consider their options if their struggles continued under Emery.

‘He’s been a brilliant coach but he first goal they concede at the weekend is horrific, it almost goes beyond coaching,’ Neville said.

‘He’s worked with great teams and won trophies, he’s overachieved.

‘You have to come to the conclusion that they’ll have to make a change. The board at Arsenal are probably split. I would think they’re in a quandary because they won’t know what to do.

‘My feeling would be you don’t make a decision, you let things breathe, until a time when it becomes really difficult.’
