Arsenal have cancelled Thursday’s press conference as the club prepare to announce Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

Freddie Ljungberg had been set to speak to the media at London Colney on Thursday morning but the Gunners have postponed the event until Friday.

The club hope to make an announcement on Arteta’s arrival in the next 24 hours and didn’t want the Swede to have to field endless questions about the Spaniard or indeed his own future at the club.

Arsenal have angered Manchester City with the nature of their approach for Arteta and, as of Wednesday, had yet to make an official approach to the club for his services.

But City will not stand in Arteta’s way as joining Arsenal is his ‘dream’.

It’s unclear whether Arteta will manage the side for Saturday’s clash against Everton but he’s expected to at least be present at Goodison Park.

Arteta was on Manchester City’s bench as the side beat Oxford United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

But that looks set to be his final outing with the club as he prepares to return to Arsenal.

The Spaniard spent five years at the club after joining from Everton in 2011.
