Nicolas Pepe has defended Freddie Ljungberg after Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City and claims the Swede is not at fault for the team’s poor performances.

The Gunners were comfortably beaten by the Premier League champions on Sunday as Kevin De Bruyne’s double and Raheem Sterling’s goal sealed a 3-0 victory for Pep Guardiola’s side at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have registered just one win in their last 12 matches in all competitions but Pepe believes criticism should be directed towards the players as opposed to Ljungberg.

‘It is us, the players, who need to rectify this,’ Pepe told RMC Sport after the match.

‘With Freddie or someone else, it would be the same.’

Ljungberg, meanwhile, has urged Arsenal’s hierarchy to speed up their process of finding a new manager following the decision to sack Unai Emery 17 days ago.

‘I think, as I’ve said to the club, it’s a great, great honour to do this,’ Ljungberg said after the defeat to City.

‘Of course Per [Mertesacker] is the academy manager and he’s doing two jobs in one go.

‘I think it needs clearing up to make a decision so that everybody knows.

‘That’s something I’ve said. It’s totally up to the club.

‘I’m very honoured and trying to do things as well as I can, but I think that it would be good to make a decision regardless of what it is.’
