Pep Guardiola is lining up a new assistant manager amid Arsenal’s interest in his current No. 2 Mikel Arteta, reports claim.

Guardiola wants Domenec Torrent to return to the Etihad should Arteta get the call to replace Unai Emery at the Emirates.

Arteta was close to landing the managerial position at the Emirates before Emery was appointed and he is now back in the frame to replace the Spaniard.

While Patrick Vieira has emerged as the favourite, Guardiola is sufficiently worried about the future of Arteta that he is considering who should replace him, according to The Sun.

Guardiola would be happy to bring Torrent, who used to be City’s assistant manager, back into the fold.

He has worked with the 57-year-old at Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the past and their working relationship only came to an end when Torrent was offered the manager’s position to replace Vieira at New York City FC.

But he left the American side by mutual agreement last month and is now on Guardiola’s radar, should Arteta be given the opportunity to take his first steps into management.

A source told The Sun: ‘Mikel is obviously wanted by Arsenal and Pep could ask Domenec to come back.

‘The pair are very strong friends together from their days at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

‘He was here for the first two years and knows the squad inside out and he is very popular.’

City are hopeful Arteta, who captained Arsenal during a spell under former boss Arsene Wenger, will stay at least until the end of the season but are willing to let him leave should compensation be agreed.
