Pep Guardiola admits Mikel Arteta has been ‘transparent and honest’ with him after the Spaniard held talks with Arsenal on Sunday.

Metro.co.uk understands that the Gunners are confident of reaching an agreement with Arteta this week after the two parties held talks after Manchester City’s 3-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium at the weekend.

Arsenal’s managing director Vinai Venkatesham and contract negotiator Huss Fahmy held talks with Arteta at his home and the 37-year-old is now expected to be appointed as Unai Emery’s permanent successor.

Arteta has taken City’s training session as usual this week but Guardiola admits he is unsure when his assistant will finally leave to join Arsenal.

Below are the questions Guardiola answered about Arteta’s situation during his press conference on Tuesday…

Q) Any update on Arteta’s situation?

Guardiola: ‘No, I know what you know.’

Q) Have you seen him?

Guardiola: ‘Today I saw him yes.’

Q) Will he be part of the game against Oxford?

Guardiola: ‘He’s travelling, yes.’

Q) What makes him such a good coach?

Guardiola: ‘Because we were so smart to pick him up, and after the other clubs want him.’

Q) What are his qualities?

Guardiola: ‘I’ve said many times, he’s an incredible person, a good manager, work ethic, that’s why he’s with us.’

Q) Will he stay or go?

Guardiola: ‘He’s talking with Arsenal so I don’t know what’s going to happen.’

Q) Were you aware of Arteta’s meeting before the pictures were released?

Guardiola: ‘Yes. I knew it, yes.’

Q) Any advice for him?

Guardiola: ‘Nothing, he’s an adult, he knows exactly what he has to do.

‘He was incredibly transparent and honest with me.’

Q) If Arteta goes, what will you do?

Guardiola: ‘The organisation, the staff, the club, is always alive. It’s not a position that always stays like it was today.

‘Maybe tomorrow the people will not be here. Now he’s part of our group and our staff and [he will] stay here.

‘When we have new news I will know it and you will know it and after we will know what happens.

‘Now he’s here, he’ll travel with us, he trained today, prepared the training session and the game.’

Q) A club the size of Arsenal going for Arteta?

Guardiola: ‘It happens, last season we had Lee Nobes [City’s former head physio] here then he went to Liverpool.

‘Now it’s happened with Mikel that teams want him.

‘He knows exactly what we want, what we would like but in the end the final decision is individual, it’s personal.

‘He’s still here because he wants to be.

‘We decided to work together three years ago, what happened in the last few days I don’t know, honestly. I would like Mikel to be here, he can explain better than me.’
