Arsenal are close to securing a surprise move for Southampton right-back Cedric Soares who is expected to complete a £5m move this week.

The 28-year-old’s contract at St Mary’s runs out at the end of the season and he appears to have no intention of extending it.

The Gunners are looking to strengthen their defensive options, having suffered a string of injuries at the back this season and Soares presents an affordable and ready-made option.

The Portugal international, who was born in Germany, moved to the Saints from Sporting in June 2015 for a fee of just under £5m.

He has gone on to make over 100 Premier League appearances for Southampton, while he also spent a brief spell on loan at Inter Milan in January 2019, but returned and has started 16 Premier League games this season.

Soares has picked up 33 caps for Portugal and was part of the squad that won Euro 2016.

Southampton are set to loan right-back Kyle Walker-Peters from Tottenham, which will pave the way for their north London rivals to bring in Soares.

The signing will not solve Arsenal’s defensive woes entirely as they still have significant injury concerns at left-back, with Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac still out.

Bukayo Saka has been filling it at left-back, while Mikel Arteta is also missing Callum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi in central defence through injury.

Pablo Mari has been brought in to ease the concerns at centre-back, with the Spaniard arriving on loan from Flamengo on Wednesday.

‘I’m a very professional player. I like working hard every day to achieve objectives,’ he said.

‘One thing I can control is working hard on a daily basis to help my team-mates to win football matches and repay the faith that Mikel and Arsenal have shown me by signing me to play here, so that’s my main objective.

‘I want to take it one day at a time and achieve big things at Arsenal.’
