Arsenal are hoping to have Sokratis Papastathopoulos available for their Premier League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night despite recent illness.

The Greek centre-back has been under the weather and is being assessed ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge.

The 31-year-old missed the 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday with Mikel Arteta lining up with David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi in the heart of defence.

The Gunners have three first team defenders out and there is little good news about any of those sidelined.

Calum Chambers, who has ruptured the ACL in his left knee, has had surgery but will be out for between six and nine months.

Kieran Tierney has also had surgery on his dislocated right shoulder but is not likely to return to full training until March.

The problems at left-back continue, with Sead Kolasinac still out with a thigh strain and will not be back in full training for two more weeks, missing the next three fixtures.

Arteta picked Bukayo Saka at left-back against the Blades and feels he could remain there in the future: ‘I think he could (have a future at left-back) because he’s willing to learn, he is applying himself big time he is someone that’s has never played (that position) before but he’s really trying to do it as well as possible.

‘You can see that he’s got many strengths to play in that position. Obviously he needs games, he needs experience and he needs to improve in some areas but that’s very good.’

Reiss Nelson is on the same schedule as Kolasinac for his return from a hamstring strain, likely to be back and available for the Premier League meeting with Newcastle at the Emirates on 16 February.

Arteta is going to have to do without captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the next two games as well, after the striker was sent off against Crystal Palace on 11 January.
