Pablo Mari is pushing to complete his move to Arsenal as the Gunners have stepped up negotiations with Flamengo, according to reports in Brazil.

The 26-year-old arrived in London with Arsenal’s technical director Edu on Saturday and the deal was expected to be completed over the weekend.

Mari had his medical with Arsenal but the Gunners were unable to agree a fee with Flamengo and the Spanish defender was forced to return to Brazil on Monday without his move being finalised.

Reports in Brazil have claimed that Arsenal have switched from offering Flamengo a permanent transfer worth £7.5 million to a loan deal which includes an option to buy in the summer.

The Brazilian club are understood to be unhappy with Arsenal’s decision to change the terms of the deal and have threatened to keep the player.

However, ESPN Brazil claims that Mari’s desire to play in the Premier League has been a key factor in the negotiations between Flamengo and Arsenal.

The report also claims that Flamengo have not ruled out the possibility of loaning Mari but want a guarantee from Arsenal that he will be purchased at the end of the season.

Coluna do Fla claim that talks between Arsenal and Flamengo are at an advanced stage and Mari is now close to completing his move to Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arteta’s desire to sign Mari may now be increased after Shkodran Mustafi was stretchered off during Arsenal’s FA Cup clash against Bournemouth on Monday evening.
