Alexandre Lacazette has told Arsenal fans there is more to come from Nicolas Pepe but says they still need to be patient with the club-record signing.

Ivory Coast international Pepe endured a largely underwhelming start to his Arsenal career following a £72million summer move from Lille, scoring just four goals in his first 27 appearances.

But the 24-year-old produced his best performance to date as Arsenal thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 on Sunday, scoring once and making two assists.

Lacazette, who scored the final goal in the emphatic victory, believes his Gunners team-mate is starting to show why he warranted such a big fee and has urged Arsenal fans to continue supporting him.

‘I used to say we need to be patient with him,’ Lacazette said. ‘He is still young, he came from another league and it is always different.

‘The Premier League is the hardest league in the world I think, so you have to be nice with new players like him.

‘He is someone who needs confidence and when you give him confidence he is better. He just needs time to understand how the league is and now we can see a really good Nicolas Pepe.’

Lacazette ended a run of nine games without a goal after notching up Arsenal’s fourth against Newcastle at the Emirates.

Following the match, he tweeted: ‘Missed that scoring feeling. Thank you to everyone for your support and celebrations, feels so good to be [be] back.’

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, said he was ‘so pleased’ for Lacazette in his post-match interview.

‘After the break we started saying we had to start closing the gap on the top teams and turn draws into wins,’ he said. ‘Today was the first opportunity and we’ve done it. All good.

‘I’m so pleased for Laca – the reaction of the players and staff towards him. He fights hard for everyone.

‘He’s been unlucky. He will gain confidence from this and knows how everyone appreciates him.’
