Arsenal were reportedly unsuccessful with a move to sign Lille star Gabriel Magalhaes this January.

Mikel Arteta was determined to strengthen his options in central defence after Calum Chambers was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a serious knee injury.

The likes of Nathan Ake, Jerome Boateng and John Stones were all heavily linked before the north London club secured a temporary move for Flamengo’s Pablo Mari in the final week of the window.

Southampton right-back Cedric Soares followed Mari through the doors at Arsenal on deadline day and the Portuguese put pen to paper on a six-month loan deal with the Gunners.

According to Le 10 Sport, Lille centre-back Gabriel was another serious target this winter. The report claims that both Arsenal and Everton submitted ‘firm offers’ over ‘many days’ for the 22-year-old.

However, all proposals were swiftly rejected as they did not match up with Lille’s valuation of the Brazilian.

Gabriel has since extended his contract with Lille until 2023, but both Premier League clubs remain interested in the defender and could increase their bids in the summer.

Arteta insisted he was pleased with Arsenal’s transfer business this January following the arrivals of Mari and Soares.

On Mari, the Spaniard said: ‘For me he is very important he balances what I want to do from the backline, he gives us more options, more solutions and opens up the pitch more.

‘He is a player we have been following for a few months and we are delighted to have him here.’

Asked about Soares, Arteta added: ‘He is a player who has big experience, he’s played in this country and in different leagues.

‘He knows what it means. He has been very willing to go to another top club. He has that desire and that commitment.

‘I followed him a few seasons ago and I really like what he can bring and it was the right conditions for us as well to try and improve the squad.’

On Soares’ fitness, he added: ‘He was being assessed yesterday and we will have more results today but he has a little issue and I don’t think he will be available to play.’
