Martin Keown believes Mikel Arteta made obvious mistake in Arsenal’s defeat against Olympiacos

Martin Keown believes Mikel Arteta and Arsenal paid the price for delaying Garbriel Martinelli’s introduction against Olympiacos last night.

The Gunners crashed out of the Europa League in almost farcical circumstances, gifting Youssef El Arabi a 119th minute winner having only moments earlier appeared to have booked their place in the last 16 following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s acrobatic volley.

Arsenal’s top goalscorer still had an opportunity to win the tie but inexplicably shanked the ball wide, standing in the six-yard box with the goal at his mercy.

Arteta felt Arsenal should have put the tie to bed long before, however, with Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe both guilty of missing presentable opportunities.

Keown, however, felt the Spaniard would have been better served by bringing on teenage sensation Martinelli earlier, with the Brazilian given only 15 minutes to impress during the second period of extra time.

The former Arsenal defender said: ‘We were that close I was tempted to tell Arteta to bring Martinelli on, but you don’t want to be disrespectful.

‘It was obvious Martinelli had to come on, we were that close to Arteta I was tempted to go over and say ‘put Martinelli on’. You have to show respect, of course you can’t go and do that.

‘The basics and the structure aren’t there. These are schoolboy errors.’
