Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said the club will ‘do the right thing’ in ensuring the future of their young players, including starlet Bukayo Saka.

The 18-year-old’s contract has been the subject of speculation given his current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2021.

Saka is reportedly earning around £3,000-per-week, prompting fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester to monitor his situation, according to the Daily Mail.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game against Newcastle, Arteta said: ‘I’m really happy with how they [the young players] are developing.

‘Part of their development is to improve their contract and tie them to the club but I have to follow a natural process.’

The Spaniard failed to provide a time frame on the negotiations, with the responsibility over contract talks falling to the club’s executives.

He added: ‘We have Raul [Sanllehi], we have Edu [Gaspar], Vinai [Venkatesham] and Huss [Fahmy] who are in charge of that and I’m sure we will do the right thing when players deserve improved contracts.’

Although naturally a winger, Saka has had to fill in at left-back with injuries to Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac, putting in some hard-working and unselfish displays.

Those attacking instincts have come in to play even when in defence, providing three assists in all competitions for the north London club.

Tricky wide player Saka may have a tough time featuring in his natural position with the emergence of wonderkid Gabriel Martinelli.

The 18-year-old has scored 10 goals in 23 appearances for the Gunners since joining from Brazilian club Ituano in the summer.
