Nigel Winterburn has been impressed with the job Mikel Arteta has done thus far at Arsenal and while it’s ‘not perfect by a long way’ there are signs that his former club are moving in the right direction.

Winterburn hailed Arteta’s ability to tackle disciplinary issues head on – with Matteo Guendouzi recently left out of a matchday squad against Newcastle after a row in their winter training camp in Dubai – and for the manner in which he’s improved Arsenal’s defence.

Despite failing to convert plenty of draws into wins, Arsenal are unbeaten in 2020 and seem a more resolute proposition under the Spaniard – who was formerly Manchester City’s assistant manager under Pep Guardiola.

And while there’s plenty of room for improvement, Winterburn threw his full support behind the Arsenal manager and is ‘positive’ about the job he’s done so far.

‘I like the job that Arteta has done at Arsenal so far. What I particularly like as well is little bits that are coming out with how he’s dealing with the discipline,’ Winterburn told GentingBet.

‘When we talk about players, the amount of money that they earn and how they can control what’s going on, I think Mikel Arteta has the right attitude, he doesn’t care who you are, if he doesn’t think you’re right, you don’t play and you stay out of the squad. I really like that.

‘Team-wise, we’ve talked about a lot more energy, a lot more belief and a lot more organisation, particularly defensively, and I’m talking about the whole team, not just the back four. Also, he’s working with a back four that has been playing without two of its regular fullbacks.

‘It’s not perfect by a long way and I think he will want to make some significant changes over the next couple of seasons, but at the moment I’m positive.’
