Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has appeared to take a dig at ex-Gunners boss Unai Emery’s communication skills on social media.

In a post on Twitter, Mustafi shared a photo of himself sat next to current manager Mikel Arteta with the caption, ‘communication is the key to improvement’.

Several stories emerged during Emery’s tenure that various players struggled to understand his instructions.

Some of the squad were also reported to have openly mocked the former Sevilla man’s grasp of English, in particular his use of the phrase ‘good evening’.

Mustafi suffered a torrid spell of form under Emery and was even voted the world’s second worst defender in a poll by Spanish publication Marca.

The 27-year-old has started in each of the Gunners’ last three Premier League matches. He is one of a few Arsenal players who have seemingly turned their futures around under new boss Mikel Arteta.

The former Manchester City coach also convinced midfielder Granit Xhaka to stay in north London, despite his on-pitch bust-up with the fans against Crystal Palace earlier in the season.

A number of players have admitted that things weren’t quite right with Emery in charge. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno went as far to say the squad was a ‘mess’ and the three-time Europa League winning manager’s instructions were ‘confusing’.

Since taking over the helm at the Emirates, Arsenal have had mixed fortunes on the pitch, with just one league win in seven.

Arteta’s squad faces the prospect of a major overhaul in the summer transfer window, with several reports that star trio Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could all be shipped out.
