Arsenal have confirmed Lucas Torreira fractured his ankle during Monday’s 2-0 win at Portsmouth in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Torreira was on the receiving end of a heavy tackle from Portsmouth defender James Bolton early in the game and the Uruguayan midfielder was taken off on a stretcher after receiving treatment.

The 24-year-old was later seen leaving Fratton Park on crutches with his right foot in a protective boot.

No timeline was given for his return but the club said they were ‘awaiting further specialist reviews’ before they devise a recovery plan.

Arsenal, who play Sheffield United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup later this month, are at home to West Ham United in the league on Saturday.

Torreira was replaced by Dani Ceballos in the cup tie, which Arsenal went on to win courtesy of goals from Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Eddie Nketiah.

The former Sampdoria player had not previously started for the Gunners since the 2-2 Premier League draw at Chelsea on January 21.

Torreira now set for a spell on the sidelines, although there was better news for full-back Kieran Tierney as Arsenal announced he is back in full training having dislocated his shoulder in December.

January loan signing, Cedric Soares, meanwhile, is expected to return to full training from the start of next week and could be in contention to make his Arsenal debut at Brighton next weekend.
