Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey as a top target ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Ghana international Partey has established himself as a key player for Atletico over the past four seasons and this week helped the Spanish club knock Liverpool out of the Champions League.

Arteta is already preparing for his first full season as Arsenal manager and will look to sign a defensive midfielder as one of his first additions this summer.

According to Telegraph Sport, the former Manchester City assistant has been impressed with Partey, who has made more than 150 appearances for Atletico since breaking into the first-team in 2015.

It is claimed Arsenal believe Partey would be able to make an instant impact at the Emirates, having flourished under Atletico’s demanding manager Diego Simeone.

Atletico are braced for approaches for Partey, who has a release clause of around £45million.

Arteta, who replaced Unai Emery as Gunners boss in December, has brought midfielder Granit Xhaka back into the fold recently but still wants to strengthen his squad in that area of the pitch.

In Arteta’s first transfer window in charge, Arsenal secured loan deals for defenders Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares.

One potential issue for Arsenal as they pursue Partey is the fact the club will unlikely be in a position to offer the midfielder Champions League football next season.

The Gunners were knocked out of the Europa League last month and are currently just ninth in the Premier League, eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea.
