Santi Cazorla wants to move into coaching when he retires from playing football, opening the door for a reunion with former teammate Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, according to reports.

The Spaniard spent six successful years in north London, linking up with Gunners coach Arteta to win two FA Cups.

Cazorla, 35, is currently playing for Villarreal and his solid performances earning him a call up to the Spain squad in June 2019.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague said on his YouTube channel: ‘It’s interesting because I spoke to Santi not so long ago and he hasn’t renewed his contract with Villarreal which finishes at the end of the season.

‘Basically what may happen, he wants two more years playing.

‘Going back to Arsenal with Arteta is something that I think he will consider as a coach.

‘I asked him about it, he said yes, he will consider as a coach when he retires but he wants to play for two more years.

‘I tell you what, Mikel Arteta and Cazorla together, really good friends first of all but really good special minds of football.’

Cazorla has already been backed by Arteta to become a ‘great coach’ despite his inexperience.

The midfielder told Goal: ‘Yes, I believed he would become a manager in the future. Even when I was playing with him, he showed great leadership in dressing room.

‘Some say it’s a gamble for Arsenal to appoint him, but I believe it’s a reasonable challenge. He also worked as a coach under Pep Guardiola.

‘I believe he can become a great coach. It’s not easy for any manager now to be like [Arsene] Wenger or [Sir Alex] Ferguson.’
