Gilberto Silva believes Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny ‘resembles’ Gunners icon Patrick Vieira, but hasn’t had the game time he deserves.

The Egypt international has made just 46 appearances for the club since joining from FC Basel in 2016, playing a bit-part role under former managers Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery.

Elneny was shipped out on loan to Besiktas at the start of this season, having been deemed surplus to requirements, but Silva believes the 27-year-old was overlooked.

He told France Football: ‘In the last few years, the situation has been difficult at Arsenal.

‘They have very similar players in midfield, with profiles that resemble each other and not really players of the profile of Patrick Vieira, or even my profile.

‘The only individual who resembled [us], that could have been Mohamed Elneny, but he didn’t play.

‘But they have not really had those types of players to cover the defensive midfield position.

‘Arsenal always plays positively, trying to deploy an attacking game, and it is not easy to find someone to marry the ability to play the forward game and to do the work in the shadows in the defensive phases.’

Silva and Vieira formed a devastating partnership in the middle of the park, as Wenger’s 2003/4 team became the only side not to lose a single game in a Premier League season.

The Brazil international broke up the play, allowing his French teammate to bomb forward and join the attack.

Mikel Arteta may well give Elneny a chance upon his return to north London at the end of the season, given the lack of depth in Gunners midfield. One player the Spaniard will be keen to keep hold of is top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, amid interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
