Jamie Carragher explains omission of Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from his team of the season

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang plays in too many different positions to be included in his Premier League team of the season.

The ex-England defender opted for a three-pronged attack including Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who were joined by Manchester City star Sergio Aguero.

There was no place in the team for the Gabon international, who is the league’s second-highest scorer on 17 goals, two behind Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘I was thinking about Aubameyang and the only problem with Aubameyang is he plays in so many different positions across the front three that I thought it’s hard… he doesn’t play on the left all the time.

‘Sometimes he plays up front, sometimes he plays in a front two with Lacazette, now and again he plays on the right. So it’s hard to sort of put him in.

‘It’s difficult to say he’s ahead of Mane or Sterling on the left, I couldn’t have just done that, I couldn’t justify that.

‘It’s the same when I go to the centre forward position. I looked at Aubameyang, Jamie Vardy and Roberto Firmino, but I have gone for Sergio Aguero.’

Carragher’s team is filled mostly by Liverpool players, given Jurgen Klopp’s side have amassed 82 points from a possible 86.

Jack Grealish, Dean Henderson, Kevin De Bruyne and Aguero were the only non-Reds players to make the grade.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be keen to hold onto his clinical striker this summer, with rumours swirling of his exit from north London.

The 31-year-old has just over a year remaining on his current Gunners deal, with the club reportedly setting a £50million price tag if interested parties Manchester United or Barcelona go in for him.
