Philippe Senderos insists Arsenal need a great defender and urged Mikel Arteta to sign Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly.

Arsenal have tasked Arteta with steering the club back to being title contenders, but the head coach is yet to make any major changes to his squad.

In an Instagram live chat with Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Senderos revealed he knew the two defensive targets Arsenal were chasing.

He said: ‘Arteta knows the environment well and can bring Arsenal back to the top.

‘After (Arsene) Wenger’s farewell it wasn’t easy to start again. With (Unai) Emery things didn’t go well, but Mikel can be the right man.

‘I want to see the Gunners up high again: you need a great defender.’

‘I know they are interested in Koulibaly and [Barcelona star Samuel] Umtiti,’ he added.

‘I would take one of the two to return to the top. The favourite? I say KK.’

Arsenal have long been linked with a move for Umtiti, but have been unable to convince the Frenchman to leave Barcelona.

Umtiti is reportedly surplus to requirements at Barcelona, but the defender is keen to stay at the club and prove himself under new manager Quique Setien.

Koulibaly has repeatedly been tipped for a big-money switch to the Premier League, but no club has been able to match Napoli’s asking price.

The Italians value Koulibaly at over £80million and it is very unlikely Arsenal will have the funds to launch a move for the 28-year-old.

Arsenal are facing a difficult transfer window due to the financial difficulties the coronavirus pandemic has caused for football.

Club chiefs have already told Arteta there is unlikely to be any big-name signings in the next window and the club will focus on securing free agents and swap deals.
