Arsenal are targeting a cut-price move for Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi, according to reports in France.

Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his defensive options ahead of next season but could be working with a restricted budget if the club miss out on a place in the Champions League once again.

Elvedi has been a regular at the heart of Borussia Monchengladbach’s defence this season and has been capped 17 times by Switzerland.

According to Le10 Sport, the 23-year-old has attracted strong interest from both Arsenal and Bayern Munich, who are exploring the possibility of signing him in the next transfer window.

Elvedi will have just a year remaining on his current deal with Monchengladbach this summer, which means the German club could be forced to sell or run the risk of losing him on a free transfer.

Speaking about his future in March, Elvedi admitted that he would be open to leaving Monchengladbach if his new club was a ‘top club’.

‘I feel very comfortable in Gladbach and still have a contract. That’s why it currently looks like I’ll be playing for Borussia next season as well,’ he told Rheinische Post.

‘Anything can happen in football, and things can move fast, but as long as I feel comfortable here, there’s no reason to leave.

‘If I were to leave, it would definitely have to be a step forward at an absolute top club.’
