Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has named Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as his toughest opponent.

Cech made close to 500 appearances for Chelsea and won four Premier League titles and the Champions League at Stamford Bridge after signing from Rennes in 2004.

The Czech Republic legend left Chelsea in 2015 to join Premier League rivals Arsenal and went on to become a key player for the Gunners before retiring last year.

Cech is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history and has explained why former Manchester United and England forward Rooney was the player he was ‘most wary of’.

‘Wayne Rooney,’ Cech told Chelsea’s official website. ‘Every time we played against United I had to make sure I was aware every time he had the ball, because he was very unpredictable and very clever.

‘He is a guy who can chase, who can fight, who can run, who is clever with his shot.

‘He could score from the halfway line, he could try and chip you if you were too high. That was a challenge I enjoyed.’

Rooney, who is now playing for Championship club Derby County, remains the record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England.

Cech, meanwhile, also said he would ‘not change a thing’ from his 11-year stint at Chelsea.

‘When I look back, I’m happy for the good things, I’m obviously not happy with the things that didn’t go exactly as we wanted, but they played an important part, so I wouldn’t change a thing,’ the 37-year-old added.

‘It was a great journey. I really enjoyed it. If I had the chance, I would do it all over again.’
