Thierry Henry says he will not hold it against Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang if he decides to leave Arsenal, though admits the Gunners’ top scorer will leave an enormous hole.

The Gabon striker – who has scored 17 times in the Premier League, second only to Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy – only has one year left on his current contract and could be sold this summer.

Arsenal’s hierarchy have made it clear they will now allow players to run down their contracts – as happened with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil – and are prepared to cash in on Aubameyang if he does not pen fresh terms.

Henry is sympathetic to Aubameyang’s position and feels he needs to do what is right for his career, with Arsenal likely to miss out on Champions League football again next season, though fears for his old club without their talismanic goalscorer.

Asked about Aubameyang’s situation, Henry told Sky Sports’ The Football Show: ‘Listen everybody will do whatever they have to do. How am I going to say to somebody to stay when I left?

‘Things happen, but that doesn’t kill the love you have for a place. But as an Arsenal fan you want them to stay.

‘But as a football player, he will assess the situation with his family, with his dad – that I know also – and they will see what is the best for them.

‘If you’re an Arsenal man you don’t want him to leave, but also the guy has a career and I don’t know what’s in his head or where he wants to go.

‘But all I know is that we’re definitely going to miss his goals if he does leave.

‘Because at the end of the day, I said it when I was at Sky, he was that kind of a “thing”. He does score goals and if you take the goals of Aubameyang away, it’s a tough one.’

Arsenal would reluctantly cash in on Aubameyang rather than risk losing him for nothing, with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, as well as Barcelona, all linked with the 30-year-old frontman.
