Mikel Arteta has explained his decision to drop David Luiz to the bench for Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City.

The centre-back has enjoyed a resurgence under Arteta, but there have been rumours the 33-year-old could leave this summer after it emerged he actually signed a one-year contract when he joined from Chelsea a year ago.

Arteta urged Arsenal chiefs to tie Luiz down to a new contract this week, but then named the Brazilian on the bench.

Asked why Luiz was dropped, Arteta told Sky Sports: ‘There are a few things that happened in recent weeks and I have to pick the team that in my opinion is the best to compete today. And that’s what I’ve done.’

Injury to Pablo Mari in the opening 20 minutes forced Arteta into making a change and Luiz entered the fray to replace the Spaniard.

Nevertheless, Luiz’s initial omission came as a surprise but it was not the only shock in Arteta’s team selection as Mesut Ozil was dropped completely from the squad.

There was no place for the playmaker in Arsenal’s larger than usual 20-man squad.

Jamie Carragher was pleased with Arteta’s team, suggesting Luiz and Ozil’s time at Arsenal is coming to an end.

‘To be honest I think that’s Arsenal going forward,’ Carragher said about Arteta’s team selection.

‘That’s what I’d like to see next season. I wouldn’t want to see those players involved next season

‘Whether Mikel Arteta is thinking like that. I think he is with David Luiz I don’t think he’ll be there next season.

‘I think Ozil has been a problem for the last few managers really they can’t get him out because of the wages he’s been on.

‘Whether it’s a tactical decision away at Man City and won’t have much of the ball, is he someone to come off the bench and really do something from there with energy or pace.

‘I can’t see it really being a problem behind the scenes. Maybe he thought it’s just not really the game for him.’
