Mikel Arteta has hailed Arsenal right-back Cedric, who could be in line to make his debut against Norwich City on Wednesday and provided injury updates on David Luiz and Lucas Torreira.

The right-back is yet to make an appearance for the Gunners after arriving from Southampton in January with a knee ligament injury.

Despite his absence from any match day squads so far, the club confirmed last week that Cedric’s loan move from the Saints has been made permanent and he has signed a new long-term deal at the Emirates.

However, the Portugal international has now recovered from his latest facial injury and is available for selection against the Canaries.

Speaking before the Norwich game, Arteta heaped praise on the attacking qualities of the defender.

‘It’s a different quality to our other full-backs,’ the Spaniard said.

‘He’s a very technical player, he’s probably the best in the final third, he can play in a four and a five that can help us.

David Luiz suffered an injury to his right knee forcing him to be substituted off in the second half of Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United, and Arteta doesn’t know how serious the problem is yet.

‘We don’t know, he was in pain the other day when he had to leave the pitch,’ Arteta said.

‘He’s not a player that normally does that so he was uncomfortable. We assessed him yesterday, he was a bit better but we don’t know. He had a scan too this morning [June 30] to see how bad it is.

‘He’s very willing, he wants to play, he’s always like that but we will have to see how he is.’

Lucas Torreira is also back in training after suffering an ankle injury in March, but Arteta admitted he is not quite ready to return to action.

‘He’s close. He needs to get another scan before exposing him to the next level [of training],’ he added.
