Arsenal are in talks with Barcelona over a deal to sign their second-choice goalkeeper Neto, according to reports in Spain.

The Gunners are in the market to sign cover for Bernd Leno, who could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta currently has Emiliano Martinez has a back-up option but Arsenal are reportedly arranging alternative short-term cover for Leno, who is expected to miss the remainder of the Premier League campaign.

Sport report that Arsenal have now opened negotiations with Barcelona over a potential deal for Neto and are keen to sign the 30-year-old on loan with an option to buy.

Barcelona, however, are not willing to accept those terms and are demanding a €20 million (£18.6m) transfer fee for the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Barca signed Neto from Valencia for an initial €26m (£23.3m) fee last June plus €9m (£8m) in add-ons.

But the Brazilian goalkeeper is behind Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the pecking order at Camp Nou and has made just four appearances in all competitions this season.

Neto has also played for Fiorentina and Juventus before joining Valencia in 2017.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Claudio Bravo, who worked alongside Arteta during their time together at Manchester City.

Meanwhile, the Gunners’ defeat to Brighton on Saturday has left them tenth in the Premier League and 11 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Arteta’s side face a trip to Southampton on Thursday.
