Charlie Nicholas doubts Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba will enjoy immediate success together at Manchester United.

French World Cup winner Pogba and Red Devils January signing Fernandes started training together for the first time last week ahead of the Premier League restart later this month.

Fernandes has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Old Trafford following his move from Sporting Lisbon and has been tipped to thrive alongside Pogba, who has missed much of the season through injury.

But Arsenal legend Nicholas believes the duo may struggle to form a successful midfield partnership from the off and has issued a warning to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over Manchester United’s top-four chances.

The Red Devils are fifth in the Premier League – three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea – ahead of their first game back against Tottenham on June 19.

‘With Manchester United, everyone is expecting them to kick on, I don’t actually see that,’ Nicholas told Sky Sports.

‘I don’t know how everyone is pairing Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to say it is going to be perfect at the start, I don’t think it will be.

‘I think the big danger for the top-four is potentially Wolves.

‘I really do think that Wolves have got themselves into a position, they love playing teams away, they tend to get big results and after the massive amount of games they have played so far this season, they have had a rest and will be fresh and fit and ready to go and with very little danger on them.

‘I think they are the big danger to make the top four.’

Manchester United fans and even manager Solskjaer have compared Fernandes to Red Devils legend Paul Scholes since his arrival a few months ago.

But Scholes feels he was ‘totally different’ to Fernandes, telling MUTV: ‘I don’t think I was a player like him, I know there’s been a few comparisons but I just think we’re totally different.

‘I think he plays higher up the pitch, I think he’s got great skill to beat a man, he looks like he wants to score goals, he’ll shoot from anywhere, he’s capable of playing a pass.

‘His set-pieces are good, his free-kicks are good. All of a sudden they look like they’re going to create, they look like they’re going to score goal every time he’s in possession of the ball.

‘I think we’re totally different, he has the skills to go past a man.

‘The only comparison is the shooting, we both think about goals and where our centre-forward is going to be.

‘His set-pieces are brilliant, I was useless at set-pieces so that’s another comparison gone down the drain.’
