Emile Smith Rowe has revealed he bases his game on Kevin De Bruyne and admitted his aim is to play as a No.10 at Arsenal.

Mesut Ozil currently occupies that position at Arsenal and 19-year-old Smith Rowe joined Huddersfield on loan in January in a bid to get more experience.

Arsenal chiefs have high hopes for the attacking midfielder and Smith Rowe has now sent a message to Mikel Arteta over his preferred position.

‘I like to be versatile and I can also play in other positions. But I probably would say I do enjoy playing in the No. 10 position the most,’ Smith Rowe told The National.

‘At Arsenal, I look up to Mesut Ozil a lot. I watch him in training and the movement he has and the little touches he does. For me to train with him every day, I can’t think of anything better.’

Smith Rowe is eager to break into Arteta’s side next season having featured three times for the Gunners in the Europa League before being loaned to the Championship.

The Englishman revealed he had a conversation with Arteta in January and is confident he will be given a chance when he returns.

‘He said that it is probably the best thing for me to go out,’ Smith Rowe said of Arteta.

‘You can see he has given the young players chances and that is something all young players should thrive off. When you see others playing you want to push yourself and get in that position as well.’

Despite being a huge fan of Ozil, Smith Rowe explained he looks to Manchester City’s De Bruyne to develop his style.

The Belgian is considered one of the best playmakers in the world and has notched an incredible 18 assists this season for his City team-mates.

He said: ‘In that era when [Lionel] Messi, [Andres] Iniesta and Xavi were in the Barcelona team, I used to watch almost every game with my dad.

‘Since Kevin De Bruyne joined City, I like to base my game around him. I look up to him so much. I just like the way he plays and everything he does.’

Arsenal are set to extend Emile Smith’s loan spell at Huddersfield so the youngster can finish the campaign with the Championship side – who are just three points above the relegation zone.
