‘I don’t understand that at all!’ – Chris Sutton hits out at Arsenal over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract situation

Chris Sutton believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be wondering why Arsenal have waited so long to offer him a new contract when they were happy to satisfy Mesut Ozil’s enormous wage demands two years ago.

Arsenal’s captain and top scorer this season is set to become a free agent in 2021 and talks over a possible extension have so far been unsuccessful.

During a candid chat with Telefoot earlier this week, Aubameyang, 30, said the Gunners still had to prove that they were right club for him to commit the twilight years of his career.

Head coach Mikel Arteta addressed Aubameyang’s interview at his Monday press conference and insisted he was ‘pretty positive’ that a breakthrough would be made in their discussions with the Gabon international.

Asked about Aubameyang’s recent comments, ex-Blackburn and Celtic forward Sutton told talkSPORT: ‘He is clearly unhappy, isn’t he? Because he did not have to say what he said.

‘And if he wanted to win things, with the greatest respect, he wouldn’t want to sign for Arsenal again, would he?

‘There will be other suitors who are after him. He’s 31… you can’t afford to hang around at Arsenal with their position at the moment.

‘There’s always turmoil at Arsenal. This whole situation has come out of nowhere – for Aubameyang to come out and speak like that. He could’ve said nothing, the fact he was strong and talks about a turning point…

‘It’s not about the money for him is it now? At his age, nearly 31, it’s about winning things.

‘There’s gonna be some big-hitters in for him. He doesn’t want to finish eighth in the table for the next couple of seasons and be part of a progressive Arsenal team and then his career finishes.’

Sutton claims Ozil has ‘done next to nothing’ since agreeing to a bumper new contract back in 2018 while Aubameyang has proven he’s a ‘superstar’ in that time.

‘I think we all understand, maybe things would be different if he was in his mid-20s and thinking about, “This is a project and I need to see this through because Arteta has been impressive”,’ he added.

‘What was telling from what I picked up was the fact he said he hasn’t had an offer recently but he did speak to the club.

‘If you’re Arsenal, you signed Ozil for big, big money when he made demands, you’re thinking, “He’s done next to nothing” and you have this guy who is a superstar who has been so, so good for them, their best player, and he’s calling them out and saying: “Why were you waiting?”

‘And why were they? I don’t understand that at all.’
