Dutch legend Ruud Gullit says he’s never understood the hype around David Luiz and has labelled the error-prone Arsenal defender ‘overrated’ in the wake of his horror show performance against Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta started Luiz on the substitutes bench for Arsenal’s first game back but was forced to introduce the Brazilian after Pablo Mari’s suffered an ankle injury midway through the first half at the Etihad.

Luiz was largely to blame for Raheem Sterling’s strike on half-time and the centre-back’s night soon got even worse after he clumsily fouled Riyad Mahrez inside the penalty area in the 51st minute.

Kevin De Bruyne made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick after Luiz’s sending off and Phil Foden added a third at the death to seal all three points for City.

Luiz’s red card meant he was suspended for Arsenal’s trip to Brighton which also ended in defeat to add to what has been a miserable return to the Premier League for Arteta’s side.

Discussing Luiz’s struggles on Ziggo Sport, former AC Milan and Chelsea star Gullit said: ‘Yes, David is not doing well.

‘I think he’s an overrated player, really. When he played in midfield I thought he was reasonable, but then there was already discussion about what he actually is as a player.

‘But he preferred to play as a defender… Well, we all remember the match between Brazil and Germany (7-1 at the 2014 World Cup). I just can’t understand it!

‘Most clubs have done away with him, but he keeps coming back somewhere.’

Luiz accepted full responsibility for Arsenal’s defeat to City during his post-match interview with Sky Sports and admitted he should have made an earlier decision over his contract situation, with his current deal nearing its end.

‘It’s not the team’s fault. It was my fault,’ the Brazil international said.

‘I take the decision to play, I should take a decision in the last two months but I didn’t.

‘Today, I think the team did well, especially after the ten men. ‘The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was my fault.

‘I should have taken a different decision in the last two months, and I didn’t.

‘It was all about my contract, if I stayed here or not. I have 14 more days maybe here, and that’s it, so today was my fault.

‘A different decision to decide my future to decide as early as possibly but I didn’t. ‘I don’t want to use that as an excuse, it’s my fault, that’s it.

‘I love to be here, that’s why I continue to train hard, that’s why I came here today, that’s why I tried to do everything, that’s why I’m here [explaining], that’s why I said to the players, “Nobody help me to speak”, it’s me, I have to show my face and be here.

‘I want to stay. The coach knows, the coach wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions.’
