Jamie Redknapp has told Matteo Guendouzi to stop acting like he’s a ‘big player’ after the Arsenal midfielder was dropped by Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal boss left Guendouzi out of his 20-man squad that took on Southampton on Thursday after he grabbed Neal Maupay by the throat following the Gunners’ defeat to Brighton.

Maupay claimed Guendouzi taunted Brighton throughout the game and Redknapp slammed the young Frenchman ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Southampton.

‘He can definitely play, make no mistake about it – he’s got talent,’ Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

‘He acts like a big player and he’s not yet. You’ve got to earn the right to be a big player. I think you’ve got to produce performances.

‘I remember we did the game at Southampton with Tony Adams and we did some analysis on him – not tracking runners and not working hard enough.

‘At that age you should be learning the ropes and doing everything you can to become a big player.

‘I don’t like the messages you hear about him. There’s a couple of times Arteta has had to leave him out of the squad.

‘At 21 years of age because you’re not doing things correctly? That shouldn’t be happening and that suggests there’s something wrong at the club.’

Arteta was quizzed about Guendouzi’s absence, but the coach refused to go into detail about why he axed the youngster.

‘Squad management. Whatever internal issue we have, we deal with it privately,’ he said.

‘The needs of the team and the needs of the football club are always the same, put the best players on the pitch that are 100 per cent focused to win the game.’

It is not the first time Arteta has snubbed Guendouzi after the pair clashed when he was first appointed Arsenal manager in December.
