Liverpool urged to re-sign Philippe Coutinho on cut-price deal by Steve Nicol

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes a move to bring Philippe Coutinho back to Anfield would be a ‘no-brainer’, if the price is right.

The Brazil international completed a £135.5 million transfer from the Reds to Barcelona in January 2018, but has failed to live up to expectations at Camp Nou.

The 28-year-old was shipped out on loan to Bayern Munich at the start of this season, but the Bundesliga champions have decided not to take up an option to make the deal permanent.

Coutinho has reportedly been deemed surplus to requirements at Barca and the club are looking to send him out on loan for another season.

Given his £250,000-a-week wage demands, the Spanish giants are said to be willing to pay a portion of his salary to help make a move happen.

The midfielder has been offered to Premier League sides Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal, but Nicol would take him back at Anfield in a heartbeat.

‘Absolutely. Why wouldn’t you? I can’t think of one reason why you wouldn’t,’ Nicol told ESPN FC.

‘The only place he’s excelled at is Liverpool. The place loves him, he loves the place.

‘Can you imagine adding Coutinho to a squad that, right now are still champions of Europe even though they’re out of this year’s competition, and are going to win the Premier League?

‘You’re going to add a player with the ability of Coutinho, who is going to come in and be in the same situation as a Timo Werner for example, where he is there to fight to get in the starting XI.

‘If it’s cut-price, yeah. Listen, this guy’s making over £13m clear a year. He’s going to have to take a hit. The price to buy him is going to have to take a hit but if the money’s right, [it’s an] absolute no-brainer.

‘If the money’s right, this would be absolutely fantastic for Liverpool.’
