Arsenal ace Matteo Guendouzi was a notable omission from the Gunners’ 20-man squad to face Southampton after the Frenchman was dropped following his altercation with Brighton’s Neal Maupay.

The midfielder grabbed Maupay by the throat at the end of Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to the Seagulls last weekend and reports have since circulated that he mocked the Brighton players throughout the defeat by labelling them as ‘s**t’ and claiming he earns more than they ever will.

Guendouzi is highly rated but he’s angered Arteta with his lack of professionalism and it appears unlikely that he would have been left out of today’s squad simply due to his form, given Arsenal are currently enduring an injury crisis.

Arteta was quizzed about the Frenchman’s absence pre-match and though he wrote it off as ‘squad management’, there was a warning that all players have to be focused to earn a spot in his side.

Asked why Guendouzi was not in the squad, Arteta said: ‘Squad management.

‘Whatever internal issue we have, we deal with it privately’

‘The needs of the team and the needs of the football club are always the same, put the best players on the pitch that are 100 per cent focused to win the game.’

Arteta was forced into making four changes with Guendouzi, Bern Leno, Gabriel Martinelli and Alexandre Lacazette dropping out.

Kieran Tierney, Emiliano Martínez, Granit Xhaka and Eddie Nketiah all come into the side.

Southampton can leapfrog the Gunners with a win on the south coast, while Arsenal need to win to capitalise on Crystal Palace’s defeat to Liverpool.
