Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has thrown a lifeline to Matteo Guendouzi over his future at the club by insisting ‘bumps’ are inevitable in any career.

The Frenchman was dropped from the Gunners’ squad for their 2-0 win against Southampton last weekend after Guendouzi grabbed Brighton striker Neal Maupay by the throat in a 2-1 defeat the previous weekend.

Guendouzi escaped a ban for his actions but it’s another incident in a growing list of misdemeanours that have angered Arteta.

That’s led to speculation that Guendouzi could leave the club this summer with reports claiming that Arteta is ready to cash in on the Frenchman.

However, Arteta appears to extended an olive branch to Guendouzi by reminding him of the qualities that convinced the club to sign him and insisting that no player’s career is entirely smooth.

‘When Arsenal picked him to come here it because of the qualities he has,’ said Arteta.

‘When you’re developing you have some bumps like any other players.’

Guendouzi is expected to return to the squad for Wednesday’s clash against Norwich.

After back-to-back defeats against Man City and Brighton, Arsenal have recorded consecutive wins against Southampton and Sheffield United.

The Gunners are outsiders to finish in Champions League places but Arteta is refusing to give up and wants an Europa League spot at a minimum.
