Mikel Arteta reavels why he ‘liked’ Matteo Guendouzi grabbing Neal Maupay by the throat

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists he ‘liked’ Matteo Guendouzi’s reaction to the Gunners’ defeat against Brighton because it shows that the Frenchman cares.

The midfielder escaped a three-match ban on Monday after the FA declined to act on footage showing Guendouzi grabbing Neal Maupay by the throat on the final whistle at the Amex Stadium.

Guendouzi was angered by Maupay’s earlier challenge that forced Bernd Leno into being stretchered off and tensions boiled over between the pair at the end of the match following the striker’s late winner for Brighton.

Reports on Monday night claimed Guendouzi made disparaging comments about the lack of quality in Brighton’s team and he’s said to have told his opponents that he earns ‘more than they ever will’.

However, Arteta insists he doesn’t need to speak to Guendouzi about his behaviour and says his reaction was a good sign that he cares about the club and their results.

‘My job is to make sure we behave in relation to the shirt that we wear,’ said Arteta.

‘Obviously what happened on the pitch – I played for 17 years – stays on the pitch because you can mould and change in context very easily and you shouldn’t be doing that at all.

‘But obviously we showed frustration. In a way I like [it] because that means we care about losing and don’t accept any defeats but I like those types of reactions earlier instead of after football games.’

Arsenal’s injury problems continued today as Gabriel Martinelli was ruled out for ‘months’ by Arteta.

The Brazilian is yet to feature in the Gunners’ first two matches back but he felt discomfort in his knee after a training session on Monday.

Martinelli was subsequently sent for scans and the club’s early fears are that he’s sustained meniscus damage in his left knee.
