Mikel Arteta is set to promote Zech Medley to Arsenal’s first-team squad for their clash against Brighton on Saturday, according to reports.

Arteta is faced with several problems in defence with Calum Chambers, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Pablo Mari all unavailble due to injury, while David Luiz is service the first of his two-game suspension after being sent off against Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

Shkodran Mustafi is expected to keep his place at centre-back while Rob Holding is available, although he has not started a match since January.

According to Football London, Arteta is now due to promote Zech Medley to the first-team squad which will travel to Brighton for Saturday’s Premier League clash.

Medley, who has trained with Arsenal’s first-team squad at London Colney this week, has made just three senior appearances for the Gunners but has not yet made his Premier League debut.

The 19-year-old, who left Chelsea’s academy to join Arsenal in 2016, has not played a first-team game for the Gunners since January 2019.

Speaking ahead of his side’s trip to Brighton, Arteta stressed the importance of his players adapting quickly to the congested fixture schedule.

‘We need to see how many players we have fit for the game because it was a big hit losing three players in key areas which, at the moment, we are very short in. But we have to adapt,’ said the Arsenal manager.

‘We’re going to have a lot of games, we’re going to be playing every three days with the schedule the Premier League has given us today so it’s going to be a challenge.’

Arsenal, who were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City on Wednesday evening, are eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
