Mikel Arteta says he would ‘love’ to keep David Luiz at Arsenal and believes the Brazilian has been a ‘key role model’ since he replaced Unai Emery as manager.

Last month, it was revealed that Luiz had only signed a one-year deal with the Gunners following his surprise move from Chelsea last summer.

Arsenal have held talks over extending the Brazilian’s contract for another 12 months, however an agreement has not been reached.

Meanwhile, Luiz has reiterated his desire to return to Benfica and claims he has already spoken to the Portuguese club’s president.

But Arteta is keen for the 33-year-old to remain at Arsenal and praised the positive influence the defender has had on his teammates.

‘I’m really happy with David, I want to keep him here with us,’ Arteta said.

‘He’s been a key role model for me since I joined.

‘I like what he produces on the pitch, I like his influence around the players and around the club. I would love to keep him.’
