Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s father’s preference to meet with Arsenal bosses in person to discuss fresh terms is holding up the club’s attempts to extend his current deal, according to reports.

The Gabon striker is out of contract next summer, when he will be free to leave the Emirates for nothing, and recently admitted that his current situation marks ‘the most important decision of his career’.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is desperate to keep the club’s top scorer in north London, personally intervening to persuade him to stay, though talks are proving tricky.

According to The Athletic, Aubameyang’s father, Pierre-Francois, looks after the forward’s interests and always prefers to meet in person rather than remotely.

During the coronavirus crisis that has been impossible, with Pierre-Francois’ insistence on doing business face-to-face meaning Arsenal have had to wait until lockdown restrictions have been loosened to make real progress on a deal.

Nevertheless, the club and player have been in talks for some time and Arteta is confident that his relationship with Aubameyang – and plans for the future – can entice him into committing his future to the club.

Speaking about Aubameyang ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City on Wednesday evening, Arteta said: ‘It is our responsibly to make him feel that this is the next step in his career.

‘In order to do that he needs to feel valued and feel [that he] belongs and feel that we want him.

‘He really needs to believe we can take this club forward and that he’s going to be a key player in that.

‘At the moment I am extremely happy with how he has been performing and behaving. We have a really good relationship, we can discuss face-to-face a lot of things.

‘I think he’s very happy at the club. We have many discussions with Pierre, his family and agent. I am pretty positive that we can find the right agreement for all parties.’
