Arsenal ace Ainsley Maitland-Niles wants to leave the club this summer because he’s unhappy with being played out of position and a lack of playing time under Mikel Arteta, according to reports.

The Englishman broke through at the club under Arsene Wenger and though he emerged in the academy as a midfielder, he’s mainly been used as a right-back.

Unai Emery continued to use the 22-year-old at right-back but Maitland-Niles’ minutes have dried up under Arteta, who has stuck with Hector Bellerin following his return from injury.

Arsenal had been keen to tie the midfielder down to a new deal but the Athletic report that Maitland-Niles wants to leave the club to progress his career.

The youngster featured in all six of Arteta’s first half a dozen games at Arsenal but he’s played in just four of their last 12, failing to start a league match since January.

Maitland-Niles is contracted to the club until 2023 and Arsenal wouldn’t be short on suitors should they decide to sell this summer.

Arsenal have blooded the likes of Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka in the last 12 months and Maitland-Niles was very much considered part of that promising group.

However, the midfielder angered Arteta by arriving late for a training session, which resulted in him losing his spot.

Maitland-Niles also feels his hopes of a midfield spot are minimal given Arsenal want to sign Dani Ceballos and Thomas Partey, the Atletico Madrid midfielder, is another target.
