Arsenal have confirmed that Shkodran Mustafi will miss the FA Cup final due to the hamstring injury he suffered against Manchester City in the semi-final on Saturday.

The German centre-back had turned in a superb performance in the 2-0 win over City, but went down in the closing stages after chasing a ball with Raheem Sterling.

There had been some hope that the 28-year-old would recover in time for the final at Wembley on 1 August. but the club has updated his status and Mustafi will definitely miss all remaining matches this season.

The Gunners have a number of issues in the centre of defence, with Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers also out, which will leave David Luiz and Rob Holding to marshal the middle of defence, possibly assisted by Sead Kolasinac or Kieran Tierney in a three-man back line.

There is better news for goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who has an outside chance of being fit for the Wembley showpiece.

The German has been out since 20 June with a knee ligament sprain but he is already running outside and getting involved in ball drills.

The club expect him to be back in full training next week, which will be in the days ahead of the FA Cup final, but whether he will be match fit in time is in question.

There is also the form of back-up keeper Emiliano Martinez to be considered, as the Argentine has largely been excellent while acting as understudy and may well have done enough to hang onto the gloves.
