Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has explained why he doubts Barcelona will sign Gunners midfielder Matteo Guendouzi this summer.

Guendouzi, who joined Arsenal in 2018 from Lorient, has been strongly linked with a move away from the Emirates after a bust-up with manager Mikel Arteta.

Barcelona have been named as potential suitors for Guendouzi but Winterburn believes the 21-year-old would need to improve ‘hugely’ to play for the Spanish giants.

Asked about the reports linking Guendouzi with Barcelona, Gunners legend Winterburn told ‘I think there would need to be a huge improvement in Guendouzi’s game for Barcelona to be willing to take him.

‘He’s a young kid who’s made big improvements but there’s a long way to go, so that would surprise me if it turns out to be true.

‘Arsenal wouldn’t just let him go easily even if they do decide to sell him, it would need to be a substantial fee, so would Barcelona think he’s worth the risk?

‘If the price is right, maybe, but it seems like a bit of a long shot to me.’

Guendouzi was left out of Arteta’s Arsenal squad for their 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

Speaking after the match, Arteta said: ‘We lost two points. I think we deserved to win the game.

‘But when you have the chances you have to kill them. Three- or four-nil and the game is over. We had to play a long time with 10 men.’
