Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is in line for a new contract after turning his form around under Mikel Arteta, according to reports.

The 28-year-old looked set to be heading for the exit door last summer, with former boss Unai Emery telling him he was free to leave the club.

However, Arteta’s arrival in December has coincided with a complete U-turn in the defender’s performances and he is now a key part of the Gunners back line.

Mustafi’s current contract is due to expire next summer and given that the north London club now have seven centre-backs in their squad, a clear-out in the next transfer window is expected.

But, The Sun claim that the German international’s improved form has sparked talk of him being handed a brand new deal at the Emirates.

Mustafi is just one of multiple players who have turned around their futures at the club under Arteta.

Granit Xhaka looked set to depart earlier this season when he was stripped of the captaincy by Emery after a spat with fans in the crowd.

The Spaniard promised to give the entire squad a clean slate upon his arrival and Mustafi is one of the beneficiaries.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 2-0 win away at Wolves on Sunday, Arteta hailed the defender’s tireless attitude.

‘We try to help every player to improve, first of all to feel that we trust them,’ he said.

‘They can make mistakes, of course, but if they are willing and they are happy to try again, I think they will get the rewarded and Musti’s attitude, his training, attention levels, the questions he’s asking and how much he wants to help everybody has been really good since I joined.

‘I think it’s a consequence of his performances.’
