Jermaine Jenas has labelled Nicolas Pepe as one of the transfer flops of the season and a piece of ‘bad business’ for Arsenal.

The 25-year-old joined the Gunners in a £72 million deal from Lille last summer and has so far struggled to live up to his price tag.

Pepe registered an impressive 22 goals and 11 assists in Ligue 1 last season, but hasn’t been able to replicate that form in the Premier League, scoring just five league goals with six assists this term.

When discussing the new recruits that have flopped this season, Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live that the Ivory Coast winger is up there with Newcastle’s £40m signing Joelinton after an underwhelming debut campaign considering his high price.

‘Oh god. yeah. That’s up there with Joelinton, I think. It’s the money, it’s as simple as that,’ the former Tottenham midfielder said.

‘The amount of money that has been spent on him in terms of what he has delivered and what you can actually see.

‘Everyone can have a bad season.

‘I don’t remember it but a lot of people talk about Thierry Henry’s first season at Arsenal and that it didn’t quite go for him straight away.

‘And they kind of lean on that quite a lot in terms of these types of signings in that he will get it right.

‘I have just not seen it with this particular player. So that business there looks bad business, at the minute.’
