Mesut Ozil has made it clear to Mikel Arteta that he’s ‘ready’ to return to the fold for Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool after he was pictured back in first-team training on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old playmaker is yet to make an appearance since the Premier League restarted last month and has been a major doubt to feature at home to Jurgen Klopp’s newly-crowned champions this week.

Back soreness has been cited as the latest reason for Ozil’s absence from the side in a drawn-out saga which has attracted widespread criticism and scrutiny, considering the German remains their top earner on wages of £350,000-a-week.

The Gunners will be desperate to bounce back from their disappointing north London derby defeat with an improved performance at the Emirates on Wednesday night and Ozil has declared himself fit for the much-anticipated encounter.

It would be Ozil’s first appearance since he managed 89 minutes of Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over West Ham back in March.

‘I A M R E A D Y#M1Ö #YaGunnersYa #teamtraining,’ he tweeted on Tuesday evening.

Arsenal take on Manchester City for a place in the FA Cup final after their clash with Liverpool and will then look to end their league campaign on a high when they face Aston Villa and Watford.

The Gunners defeat away to Spurs sees them languishing down in ninth place in the table and their hopes of securing European football are now hanging by a thread.

Earlier this month, Arsenal legend Martin Keown urged his former club to offload Ozil in order to ‘protect the next generation’.

Asked whether Ozil has a future at the club, Keown told Stadium Astro: ‘No, I don’t think he does.

‘And I think really this summer now they may see the player being paid off, because I think now it’s about protecting the next generation.

‘I think it’s a real shame, because he had a magnificent talent, but if you’re not prepared to work hard out of possession for the team, then you don’t get to play in the new Arsenal at the moment and that’s what Arteta is all about.

‘Work ethic comes first and then everything else is a bonus you play from there.

‘Clearly he’s not seeing enough on the training pitch.

Keown believes Arsenal made a huge mistake when they handed Ozil a lucrative new contract as it made the midfielder overly comfortable and set the wrong kind of precedent for the club’s young talent.

‘People go into comfort zones whether they like it or not, they can’t often see it. But, you know, that must have played a part. He’s a millionaire every month, after tax,’ the ex-Arsenal defender added.

‘My attitude to that is every player should get the best contract they can, and if he’s perfuming he deserves that, but when he doesn’t, it’s very expensive for Arsenal football club.

‘It maybe sends the complete wrong message to some of those youngsters, he’s had opportunities he hasn’t taken.’
