Mikel Arteta is ‘confident’ Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will remain at Arsenal beyond the summer and feels the north London club is the ‘perfect place’ for him.

The Gabon international has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract at the Emirates and is yet to commit his future to the Gunners.

Reports claim that the 31-year-old is demanding a new three-year contract worth up to £250,000 a week to convince him to stay.

Aubameyang has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers since he made the switch from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, recently becoming the club’s fastest ever player to hit 50 Premier League goals.

Speaking before their clash against Aston Villa on Tuesday night, Arteta admitted that while he can’t set a time frame for when a decision will be made, the signs are looking promising.

‘I don’t know, to put a date right now is very difficult,’ said the Spaniard.

‘I like the way the conversations are going, I like what I’m hearing. I’m sure for both parties, the quicker we can do it, the better for everyone.

‘I am confident he will extend his stay.’

And when further pressed about why he is so positive on Aubameyang’s future, Arteta said: ‘He’s generally happy. I think he is enjoying his football.

‘He is settled in the country and his family are good.

‘I think he can sense – and we’ve told him – how much we like him, how much we value him.

‘I think the connection he has with the fans is unique. I believe he is in the perfect place for him.

‘Everything I have from him and the people around him is the same. So I don’t have any arguments to say something different.’
