A plane flew over Villa Park on Tuesday night, shortly after kick-off in the Aston Villa vs Arsenal match, with a banner trailing behind it which read: ‘Back Arteta Kroenke Out.’

There were, of course, no spectators in Villa Park, but the stunt was caught on camera as the Premier League game was played out below.

The banner was reportedly organised by the group ‘Kroenke Out’ and was funded by a Justgiving page which raised £1,700, according to ESPN.

The Kroenke Out group had declared that the stunt was going to take place in advance, writing on Twitter: ‘Tonight is the night! At kick off you can expect to see a ‘BACK ARTETA, KROENKE OUT’ plane fly above Villa Park Stadium for 10-15 minutes. This is 8:15pm. Spread the message #BackArteta #KroenkeOut #BAKO #BackArtetaKroenkeOut.’

Stan Kroenke, the Arsenal owner, has been criticised by a number of fans for not investing heavily enough in the playing staff at the club.

Many are disgruntled after another season of struggle outside of the Premier League top four, but the arrival of Mikel Arteta has brought optimism.

A shock win over Manchester City on Saturday night has seen the Gunners book a place in the FA Cup final and there is increasing belief that Arteta will be able to build a successful side next season.

However, he is likely to need investment in the playing squad, especially as some players are expected to leave and will need to be replaced.

The economic uncertainty of the coronavirus crisis has made funds even tighter at Arsenal and it is unlikely that Arteta will be handed much of a war chest in the transfer window.

A banner flown over Villa Park is unlikely to have any impact on the situation.
