Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ agent has rubbished speculation that the defender could be set for the exit door at Arsenal, describing the recent rumours as ‘fake news’.

The 32-year-old centre-back has made 68 appearances for Arsenal since arriving from Borussia Dortmund back in 2018 but struggled for game-time in the final few weeks of the Premier League campaign.

Since the lockdown, Sokratis has played just one minute of football in all competitions and Mikel Arteta is expected to start with a back-three of David Luiz, Rob Holding and Sead Kolasinac for this weekend’s FA Cup final clash with Chelsea at Wembley.

According to, Sokatris does not feature in Arteta’s plans for the future as there are serious concerns about the Greek’s ball-playing ability, hence why Shkodran Mustafi has been preferred when fit.

The report claims the Gunners are looking to move Sokratis on to another club but it’s clear the experienced centre-half has every intention of seeing out his contract in north London, which runs through to 2021.

‘He will stay,’ Sokratis’ representative, Konstantinos Farras, told reporter Freddie Paxton.

‘I don’t see a reason to leave.

‘I don’t know why everyone is writing wrong and fake news.’

Arsenal look set to start next season with three of their senior central defenders sidelined following injuries to Mustafi (hamstring), Calum Chambers (knee) and Pablo Mari (ankle).

Arteta has high hopes for £27million summer arrival William Saliba but believes centre-back is a position which is still in need of strengthening ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Speaking after Arsenal’s victory over Watford, the Spaniard said: ‘I already mentioned to you three central defenders that are not available and we haven’t had them available for a long time anyway during this season.

‘We will have to address that.’
