Ian Wright has hailed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s achievements as ‘legendary stuff’ after the striker broke a Thierry Henry goal-scoring record for Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Aubameyang scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Norwich, taking his tally to 51 Premier League goals in just 79 games.

In doing so, the 31-year-old became the fastest player in the club’s history to reach 50 Premier League goals, beating Henry’s record of 83 games to reach the half century.

Wright, who held the record himself before Henry with 87 matches, was quick to hail the history-maker, tweeting: ’50 goals in 79 games!!!! Legendary stuff. Elite striker. Congratulations.’

Aubameyang was delighted with the recognition, replying: ‘Big thank you Legend.’

Asked about breaking Henry’s Arsenal record, Aubameyang told Sky Sports: ‘[I am] really proud, really proud.

‘First of all I’m proud of the team because we did a great job. I’m really happy and proud.

‘My performance was good, I think. I’m always happy to score goals and help the team win games.’

The Gabon international has taken his overall Gunners tally to 63 goals in just 101 games but could be nearing the end of his career in north London.

Aubameyang’s current contract expires in 2021 and the club could look to cash in on him this summer if he does not sign a new deal, although he hinted on Wednesday that he may extend his stay at the Emirates.

Rising star Bukayo Saka signed a new contract on Wednesday and Aubameyang could still follow his lead.

Aubameyang told BT Sport: ‘I know, I know! I’m really happy that Bukayo signed da ting! [laughing]

‘And now we’ll see [about me]. We’ll talk with the club and we’re going to see what’s going to happen.

‘But first of all I’m really focused on the games, this end of the season, so we will see.’
