‘You can’t play with this mentality’: Granit Xhaka slams Arsenal’s performance in Aston Villa defeat

Granit Xhaka has questioned Arsenal’s mentality in their disappointing 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

Trezeguet’s powerful finish in the first half was enough to lift Villa outside of the Premier League relegation zone with one game to go.

Mikel Arteta’s side offered little in return and despite having 69 per cent of possession, they failed to register a single shot on target over 90 minutes.

The result means that Arsenal will finish outside the top six for the first time in 25 years and their only hope of qualifying for the Europa League is by winning the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Back-to-back wins against Liverpool and Manchester City last week may have let complacency creep in and after the game, Gunners midfielder Xhaka admitted his side went into the match with the wrong approach.

‘In my opinion, you can’t come here and play like this,’ Xhaka said. ‘It’s not good enough and you can’t play with this mentality.

‘It was not enough to take something from today, and we knew if we won today, the last game if we won as well we could have got into the Europa League, but now we have to win the FA Cup and we have more pressure. But we will do everything to win the FA Cup now.’

When further pressed on what went wrong against Dean Smith’s side, Xhaka said: ‘I think it was Aston Villa, their fight, they put everything out in each half and in my opinion they deserved the three points.

‘We have a gameplan and we know they are very strong on set-pieces but we did too many fouls near our box, too many corners against them but we didn’t play our gameplan.

‘They were more aggressive than us and deserved it.’
