Robin Van Persie says Arsenal must reinforce the squad with world-class players to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the club.

The Gabon international has entered the final year of his contract and is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Reports claim the Gunners are confident their top scorer will extend his stay at the Emirates, however, Barcelona could yet spoil the party if they decide to make a move for the 31-year-old.

Aubameyang swooped Arsenal’s Player of the Season award for another outstanding campaign in which he scored 27 goals, two of those coming in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

Arsenal’s funds for transfers are expected to be limited in the transfer window due to the financial impact of the Covid-19 crisis.

The north London club made 55 redundancies to key staff members including long-term scout Francis Cagigao, who discovered the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Hector Bellerin and Gabriel Martinelli.

Van Persie – who made the switch from Arsenal to Manchester United due to a perceived lack of ambition from the Gunners – feels his former side have to surround Aubameyang with players of his level to convince him to stay.

‘I don’t know what Arsenal have offered him and I’m not really talking about money, I’m more talking about players,’ the Dutchman told beIN Sports.

‘Players like him want to play with world-class players. He is a world-class player in my opinion and he wants to be surrounded by world-class players.

‘Then you have to ask him, it’s up to him, if he thinks that he can win the Premier League at Arsenal.

‘Because winning the FA Cup was very nice, but these type of players and Arsenal football club want to compete for the Premier League and the Champions League.

‘That is the big goal, you want to compete with the best teams there are.’
